Discussion Guide for Land and how it gets that way
These questions can be used to stimulate a discussion about the characters and issues presented in this film and to also encourage applying the events and issues in the film to the community in which the audience lives.
Think about the five major characters at the center of this film (Jack Kain, Charles Baker, Jim Boggs, Ann Richmond, Libby Jones). What, if any, kinds of changes did you see in any of them during the film? What do you think might account for the changes you observed? Why did you not see changes in some?
For each of the major characters (Jack Kain, Charles Baker, Jim Boggs, Ann Richmond, Libby Jones) in this film, consider the following:
What are their views about growth and development?
What are their views on the land?
What do they believe about property rights?
What would you say are the values that underlie their beliefs on these issues? In other words, what are they saying is important or desirable to them when they talk about these issues?
To whom or what do you think each person feels a sense of loyalty?
How does this influence their views on these issues?
Do you feel sympathy with any of these characters? Why or why not? If you were living in Woodford County, which of these characters would you say most represents your views on these issues andhow?
If you were living in Woodford County, how would you vote on a proposal to develop another farm into a residential subdivision? What would lead you to this vote?
Imagine that you and your family owned some farm land in this county and a developer like Jack Kain or Charles Baker came and offered to buy your familys farm. What factors would enter into your decision about this offer?
Imagine that you and your family have an opportunity to move to a new subdivision in a rural area where you live. What factors would enter your decision on this move?
In some communities, like Woodford County, there is considerable conflict when proposals for development arise. But in other communities, development is welcomed. What might account for these different reactions?
Think about your own community:
How would you describe your community? What does it look like? How important is the landscape to how you and others feel about your community? What is the reaction in your community when a new residential or commercial development occurs? How does it compare to what happens in Woodford County?
